Pastor Widger's Message for August 2019
Many things compete for our attention each day. Political pundits tell us to focus on this issue. Community activists say “pay attention to this important matter”. Commercials try to get our attention with the promise that life will be better if we use their products. So where should we actually focus? What really matters?
Paul, in writing to the church at Corinth says this, “For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.” 1 Corinthians 2:2 NIV. There are all kinds of things to focus on even in our church. Good things like strategic plans, spiritual growth pathways, small group Bible Studies, rebranding campaigns, new logos, improving programs and visitor connections, shut-in visits, chancel preparation, new kitchens, and so many more things. Are these things important? Yes, indeed. Are they what really matters, only inasmuch as they do the one thing that really matters! Every effort we make in ministry should point towards that which truly matters. Jesus Christ and Him crucified. This verse spoken to a church in Corinth nearly 2,000 years ago is a beautiful summary of the Good News. God’s amazing love packaged in human flesh. The Christ sent to restore our relationship with the Creator and His creation. Jesus recreating the intersection of heaven and earth.
As we keep what really matters (see again 1 Corinthians 2:2) central to our plans, hopes, dreams, visions, action plans, operational details...then we will truly begin to see eternal fruit. Apart from the Gospel nothing really happens in the heavenly realm; but when the Gospel retains centrality the gates of hell will not prevail.
